Why visit Antigua?

Letsgo2 employees have travelled extensively to the destinations we feature. Here are the five main reasons they would consider a visit to Antigua.

Beaches
There are 365 beaches on Antigua, one for each day of the year. The great majority rest inside the calm, protected waters of the islands Caribbean side. All are open to the public, and so the challenge posed to a visitor is not how to gain access to the best of them but simply how to locate the beach that suits ones taste.

Entertainment and Places to Visit
The hotels offer entertainment on the property although not every night of the week, this will vary between local bands, discos and in house derived by using hotel staff. The local entertainment is limited outside of the hotels but the hotel concierge will information for the bet places to visit, a must is Sunday afternoon and evening at Shirley Heights. English Harbour is a graceful and evocative historic district which is focused on the fifteen square miles of Nelsons Dockyard National Park. Developed as a base for the British Navy in the great age of sail, the harbour served as the headquarters of the fleet of the Leeward Islands during the turbulent years of the late 18th century. Today Nelsons Dockyard has been completely restored, and it is now the only Georgian dockyard in the world.

Watersports
Most resort hotels offer facilities for a range of water sports. Equipment for snorkelling and scuba diving is cheap and easy to hire and most hotels also hire out windsurfing boards. Most of the larger hotels provide water skiing and sunfish sail boating facilities. Antigua has excellent facilities for sailing and is famous for its international sailing regatta held once a year during April or May. Smaller regattas are held throughout the year, in particular a 2 day event at the Jolly Harbour Yacht Club starting on Valentines Day, a Cruise Race in July, and a 2 day regatta in November. There is year round deep sea fishing for wahoo, kingfish, mackerel, dorado, tuna and barracuda. Yachts of all sizes can be chartered and an annual sport fishing tournament is held at the end of April to early May. Spear fishing is prohibited.

Climate
Antigua has a tropical climate with warm temperatures year round and a great deal of sunshine. The warm tropical climate results in relatively minor variations in daily temperature throughout the year. The hottest month on average is July/August and the coolest, December. The wettest months are September to December but the rain is normally intermittent and would not upset the holiday routine.

Restaurants and Cuisine
The hotels serve a varied cuisine and usually to a good standard. They include fresh seafood (especially tuna and shell fish), tropical fruit, vegetables and some Caribbean dishes. There are some good restaurants outside the hotels and these are well worth a visit.
