Exploring “Spice Island” with Telfor Bedeau will challenge your fitness, stimulate your senses and capture your heart

The moment you touchdown on the stunning island of Grenada, the scenic beauty and lush landscape will enchant you. Intoxicatingly sweet aromas of exotic spices, verdant peaks and quaint harbours viewed from picturesque vistas make Grenada one of the most stimulating destinations for each of your senses to experience, and with mile upon beautiful mile of idyllic coastline, it would be all too easy to park yourself on a beach lounger with a cocktail and simply drift away with the dreamy breeze.

But a resident of the eastern coastal town of Soubise would beg to differ.

Telfor Bedeau is somewhat of a Grenadian legend. While other men in their 70’s may be contemplating retirement, perhaps a relaxing Caribbean cruise and more time spent mooching around a golf course perfecting their shot, grandfather Telfor is busy sailing around the island of Grenada. In a boat he built himself. And he is planning to windsurf it next.

Telfor brings to life the history and magic of Grenada during his hikes, which can be tailored to suit all levels of fitness (a massive pro when you consider he is especially fond of “marathon hikes” which can cover 30 miles over 6 peaks) although hikers must make their own way to meet Telfor as he doesn’t own a car. With organized tours and mass-marketed excursions being so popular in the Caribbean, taking a hike with Telfor is a refreshing way to explore the destination, through the eyes of someone so passionate and knowledgeable about their home.

The island of Grenada lends itself to being explored on foot. The lush green mountains leading to waterfalls and rainforests; tranquil views of the offshore islands of Sugar Loaf, Canouan and Sandy Island and down into the bustling capital of St Georges, where welcoming vendors sell spices and trinkets ranging from the legendary nutmeg jam to baskets of fresh spices and jars of hot sauce.

Grenada offers many unmissable tours, such as the Grenada Chocolate Company factory tour and a trip to the nutmeg processing factory in Gouyave, but for a fascinating insight into the true history, culture and beauty of this island, there is no better way to explore than through the eyes and feet of Mr Telfor Bedeau…..the added bonus is that you will more than earn your place on that sun lounger afterwards!
