Phuket Travel Guide

Phuket is Thailand's largest island. From partying in Patong to sunbathing on secluded sandy beaches, Phuket holidays offer a little bit of everything. Whether you prefer boat tours or bar tours, temple-seeing or spa-treating, jungle-trekking or waterpark-riding - Phuket's got it covered.

Patong is the busiest town and beach. It's where you'll find the jazziest nightlife on the island (cabaret shows, go-gos, neon-lit bars and the like), as well as lots of bustling tourist attractions, including a go-karting speedway.

Karon beach - on the west coast - is one of Phuket's best-loved sandy stretches, home to several upscale family-friendly resorts, including the Centara Grand Beach Resort. It's less touristy than Patong, but still has a decent selection of bars, restaurants and amenities along the beachfront.

Things get quieter as you head north towards Siriat National Park. A beautifully unspoilt protected area, development has been strictly limited. Luckily, one incredible resort gained permission to be built here, Keemala, which offers architecturally ambitious treehouse-style pool villa accommodation in a very special setting (you'd never believe you're only a 20-minute taxi ride from Patong).

It's where you'll find some of Thailand's swankiest resorts, including The SurinThe Surin Phuket on the north-west coast, The Shore at Katathani on the coveted Millionaire's Row, and Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket in the tranquil south-east.

Weather in Phuket

Peak season in Phuket runs from November - February, which is the driest time of year, with comfortably warm temperatures.

April and May are very hot, and best avoided unless you're a total sun-worshipper and able to cope with temperatures soaring above 37°C degrees.

The worst time to go is September - October; this is the rainiest time of year. That said, rain tends to arrive in short, sharp downpours which quickly clear, so it is possible to be lucky with the weather at this time of year (and get the benefit of 'low season' hotel rates).

Dining in Phuket

As with elsewhere in Thailand, street food is popular, cheap and tasty across-the-board in Phuket. Head to Phuket Town for the busiest and (arguably) best street food vendors, dishing up deep-fried chicken drumsticks (elevated to a whole new level with a Thai-style batter), spicy salads and salty stir fries.

If you're longing for something more familiar, you'll find steakhouses, pizza and burger joints along the beachfront. There are also several upmarket eateries scattered across the island, including French, Italian and button-poppingly good American restaurants, as well as those serving traditional Thai classics.

Where to stay in Phuket

Karon Beach

Karon is home to the third longest sandy beach in Phuket. Less developed than Patong and Kata Beach, and with plenty of space between resorts, it rarely feels crowded. Karon is a great place to stay if you like your beaches quiet, but want an easy taxi ride (15 minutes) to the buzzing nightlife of Patong. It's here you'll find Centara Grand Beach Resort (at the secluded, northern end of the beach), and the Centara Karon Resort - both of which are good choices for families thanks to their tot-pleasing waterslides , pools, and award-winning Kids Clubs.
Karon Beach

Kata Beach

South of Karon, Kata Beach is one of the most popular places to stay in Phuket. Quieter than Patong, there's still a decent selection of shops, bars, and restaurants. The big, white sandy beach is the highlight here (take lots of stunning photos at sunset), and there are loads of tourist attractions along the beachfront - Dino Park mini-golf, Surf Phuket Flowrider as well as long-tailed boats and kayaks for hire. Stay at either Centara Kata resort (good for families), or The Shore at Katathani Phuket (an upscale adults-only sanctuary).
Kata Beach

Surin

Surin is one of the most coveted places on the island, known as 'millionaire's row' - thanks to the top-end resorts and luxury mansions that take pride of place along the oceanfront. High-end boutiques, restaurants and wine bars have opened to compliment the top-calibre accommodation here, giving the whole place a very upmarket feel. As you'd expect, the beach is very special indeed: un-crowded, with white sand and aquamarine Andaman waters perfect for watersports (thankfully, motorised watersports are restricted, in the interests of keeping the peace). Stay at The Surin Phuket, or Manathai Surin Phuket.
